Do you think it is probably possible (obviouslly will get it looked at down the line!) to widen this opening to almost full width for either bifolds or two fixed panels and similar doors? Room is 3.5m wide, I was thinking of going 3m, with 25cm each side that hopefully is sufficient to hold a larger lintel?

If I do this (i.e. hire a builder to do it for me!) will building control need to be notified as change of support?

Finally, assuming nothing too drastic going on (house was built in 2006, seems pretty solid to me!) what sort of ball park figure are we looking at for labour? 3 days work, 2 people?

Yes you will need building control (£250ish) and probably structural calculations (£350ish)
I believe 665mm is the closest you can go to the internal side of the external corner of the house (8-900mm externally) without having major calculations and building work involved to sure up the corner of the house.

I would recommend a proper window company for supply and fitting the bifolds (we deal with them more, Know the makes and have to give proper guarantees).
Builder for the work

If you know a good builder or window company local to you talk to them first as they will probably have contacts for everyone else.
If not your first port of call may be to an architect or structural engineer.

Thanks. So, 66cm could be more or less where it is now (corner is on the right, rest of house to the left). Its the area to the left I really want to open up for more light and better view to the garden.

External minimum pier is 665mm.
Is that dependent on the house and construction? 665 external is what I used to think but I had structural calcs for a job a couple of weeks ago and we was told it was internal. Possibly a not very good engineer or something to do with the house?
