we had a few workman doing some work in our renovation. Our carpenter was fitting some howdens internal oak hardwood door. Someone commented howdens doors can't be planed are are designed for new frames (we kept old frames). Is this true?

modern internal "oak" doors are generally veneered on a cheap core (what they call "engineered"). The sides may have a little addition material, the instructions supplied with them will tell you how much can be taken off. Probably a few mm. I believe there is one door in their catalogue that is made of solid wood.

If the instructions have been lost, have a look here
