bondholders will lose 7.7% in real terms.

By having savings that are eroded by inflation.

So can we assume that you have now finally got rid of all of your bonds or are you including yourself as one of those that will be losing 7.7%? If so, why, when you are constantly telling us of your investment prowess in other areas?

By default, 'bondholders' will not be as bad off as those with cash in the bank who are losing the full rate of inflation, won’t they?

I have fancied having PB's again. Used to own them years ago.

Not sure if they worth it these days but, you never know, those numbers may come in!

From MSE this week, but figures based on 03/10/2022.

Basically then (and based on "average luck"), premium bonds are

- better than an instant access ISA (just)
- half as good a return as one yr fixed savings, or two yr fixed ISA

Other considerations though:

- the above only becomes a "reliable" guide once you hold a fair chunk of bonds (IIRC, MSE talk about £!)k being a rough figure)
- once at PB max. investment, returns can't be reinvested, so no compounding of returns, offset against
- the lucky few can significantly exceed the average return

Show me a few dozen.
Plenty of JohnD investment bragado in the other premium bond thread that you got closed a.k.a. JohnD's rubbishing of premium bonds yet at the same time telling us you’ve won each month and rarely below £75 which would be a pretty good return with interest rates being so low at the time. I think last month was your first month you hadn’t won. Anyone interested can just search ‘European investments' under your name to see the 75% profits you claim to have made (plus dividends) and perhaps they will then wonder why someone as investment savvy as you claim to be keeping money in something that’s 'losing' you 7.7%. Still, with you constantly offloading those poor performing savings you have with premium bonds you should be down to zero holding within the next year or so then you can really go to town rubbishing them. I can’t wait.

That's not what JohnD said.

The total prize fund paid out each year will be 3.0% of the pot.

Whether you, as an individual, win more or less than that, will be down to luck.

No "claim" about it.

You might not know that inflation has increased dramatically in the last few years, making cash holdings a very poor deal. Previously I found it useful to keep more of a cash buffer

I'm sorry that you have a closed mind.

Surely I told you before, "you really shouldn't read my posts, if they upset you."

They don't upset me. They confuse me. You say premium bonds are next to useless and don't keep up with inflation. You say your investments elsewhere are doing excellent - far, far outstripping the rate of inflation. Yet you say you still have premium bonds. Weird. Still, you carry on telling us how well your premium bonds are doing if it makes you feel good - I wouldn't expect anything less from you.

Who can spot the point when Premium Bonds became a really, really bad place to put your money?
