My builder is experiencing problems installing my twin thermostatic valve. First it went on at low pressure, then stopped for around 15 secs before operating normally. Now he's made an adjustment and it's far too hot but when I try and turn it down, it shuts off completely.

He tried to tell me that the valve was faulty but he's said that about every other thing we've bought for the bathroom and I'm losing confidence.

He did mention that he'd used 22mm pipe against the advice of the plumber and I wondered if this would have had an impact but I'm confused as to why the shower shuts off when turned down to cold -- I thought it should do this only when turned up. Please help if you can. THANKS.

I had similar problems whilst installing a Hudson Reed thermostatic shower valve some time ago. Initially zero flow. Spoke to their technical team and the inadequate QA had allowed a batch of valves to leave the factory out of adjustment. Technical talked me through the procedure.

It is not uncommon to find problems with bathrrom fittings - even the top companies don't take quality control seriously anymore (despite ISO9000 and all that nonsense); thats why plumbers stick on a mark up - to fund all the agro.
