I have an Alpha CD24C(?) boiler.

Basically when it is switched on but not working (ie powered up but not heating water) it makes a 'humming' noise constantly.

Any ideas what this is or could be? Is it going to die on me or could it just be a part that needs replacing?

Thanks

It all depends on how loud the noise is.

The mains transformer is always energised and the laminations always make a hum but its not normal that it can be heard except very close to the boiler in a quiet environment.

If its a significant noise then there may be some fault although difficult to guess what.

If its louder then why not get the boiler serviced and express your concern to the engineer who will advise if its normal or not.
