HW cylinder drained

I went to replace gate valve on the cold feed to the HW cylinder, i tied up ball cock in tank in loft ran off hot and cold taps to drain tank and pipework. When all was drained down and upon replacing gate valve i noticed cylinder was completely empty. Some sort of vacuum? HOW COULD THIS BE WHEN IT IS VENTED HOT WATER?

Possibly somebody has tee'd off the cold feed to the cylinder (low down) and used it as a cold feed for something else.

Then when you drained the cold tank the cylinder drained itself via this piece of pipework.

Saw just such a case this week.
