I don't have mains gas

Hi i was wondering if anyone can help me?? I am buying a new house which doesn't have mains gas supply.

What are my alternatives?? I have been told using electric will be expensive?? is oil the way to go or anything else better??

If anyone can help i would be very grateful.

What you go for depends to an extent on the size of the property, oil will be the cheapest alternative

If its a brand new house then it will have excellent insulation and the electric heating could be reasonable.

If its an old house then oil or LPG are the alternatives BUT the capital cost of the installation will exterminate any saving on running costs for 5-10 years unless the insulation is very poor.

Proper loft insulation at least 200-300 mm thick is a cheap way to reduce heating costs significantly.

Have you asked if you can have mains gas installed even though it won't be cheap to install.

Running on Economy 10 may be more useful as you get an afternoon boost.

unfortunately we don't have a fireplace. The house is an ex council and currently runs on an air vent system. The current owners say it's good (as they would) but it looks like it's been there since it was built??

I heading towards re-insulating everything and just seeing how i get on?? It would be the cheaper option!!

You could look at a heat pump.

An air to water heat pump could give you a slightly higher running cost to gas CH if installed correctly. Insulation is the key to making heat pumps work financially.

Current design air to air heat pumps give around 4.5Kw of heat for every 1Kw of electricity consumed (Outside temperature dependant) so I would fit a ducted unit upstairs, a mini split multi in each downstairs room and ann air to water HP to heat your DHW with an immersion top up... Not cheap to buy but a good way to heat and cool your home..

Toshiba are about to launch new equipment with COPs of around 5 to 1, plus there is only 5%VAT on equipment and install costs of domestic heat pumps

Just how many years woulf that take ot give any advantage over the existing electric heating???
