WhatsApp doesn’t block unknown numbers by default, so random spam like that still slips through. I’ve had the same thing happen and just block/report the number. If you ever work with WhatsApp for business stuff, tools like
ultramsg let you control who can message you through the API, which feels a lot tidier than the personal app. For normal use though, blocking is really the only move.
