Hi there, I have a problem with noise from upstairs and while I don't want total soundproofing as it's too expensive I'd like to add a layer of 30mm heavy density insulation.

I seen a thing on YouTube where the guy was using a light plastic grid and I think it was held up with wall joints and string attached to the original ceiling and then filled with insulation and sealed with plastic sheets.

Has anyone ever built a ceiling like this?

What would be the lightest and cheapest way to add 30mm insulation to a ceiling please?

Thanks very much for any advice

Hi freddy, thanks for replying.

I don't need to totally soundproof, I just want to insulate enough so that I can't hear people talking at normal levels.

Hi, I've been looking at some thiings that might make it possible but I don't have the whole set of what I think it would take.

I have three solid walls to use and one plasterboard so I was thinking maybe some of these along the sides:

I don't know what to get for down the middle of the celing though so as to create a grid, something like aluminium H shaped profile to connect from the side ones sounds logical but I can't find any.

If I manage to make a grid then I could fill it with this:

and then cover it off with these???

What do you think? Lightweight and slim but enough to stop conversation level noise?

Thanks for any advice please

So you're not from the States then but the UK, so why indicate that you are in your profile then? That's probably why nobody bothered to reply!

Anyhoo, do you really want a pvc cladding ceiling? That's pretty horrific don't you think?

Why not just get a suspended grid ceiling and board it with plasterboard and suspend your insulation on that? ie do a proper job? If you're pretty good at that kind of thing you may get away with getting tapered boards and sealing the joints and avoiding a plasterer.

eg http://www.ceilingtilesupermarket.co.uk/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=6

Whilst this method will go some way to reducing the noise of voices from above measuring sound reduction is largely a personal thing, what's a good sound reduction to one person will be rubbish to another and vice versa, its extremely hard to quantify.

Hi freddy, thanks very much for replying again.

I don't really want to use plasterboard as I've never lowered a ceiling before and I only have 10cm to play with as the top of the window is 10cm below the ceiling.

Thanks for linking to the grid system, you don't happen to know where I would find a good tutorial for using those peices do you?

I know PVC won't look great but the sound from upstairs is driving me insane.
