What did he do prior to removing the old rad? ie did he drain the whole system, what valves were turned off etc?
I think that you need a new partner who does not tackle jobs he cannot complete!
However, all is not lost! There are plenty of professionals waiting to come round and sort it out an a modest call out charge which I expect he will have no problem paying.
