Hi - had new boiler fitted last week in the attic - when heating is on there is a constant whining, just at that pitch that digs into your head  it wakes us in the morning and can be heard all over the house - It seems to be coming from the internal pump - There's no speed setting on the pump - I think it's automatically controlled by the boiler but it seems to be running at full pelt all the time - you can hear the water really gushing through rads. The pump also overruns for a long time after the system has gone off unless a hot tap is opened then it goes off straight away. Radiators heat just fine but that noise is so damn annoying. I will be calling BG and Ideal today - hopefully I'm correct to assume that this noise is wrong - any thoughts ?

Many thanks
Shaun

It could be slightly low on water - If it's a sealed system, check the pressure.
It might be to do with the way the boiler's mounted; if it's on roof timbers they can carry noise.

Have known that boiler's predecessor have to be changed because of the hot water "keep hot" function which couldn't be turned off. So the boiler fired for a minute in the middle of the night and woke everybody up.

cheers for the response Chris - pressure just about 1.5bar cold as I was told it should be. Boiler not on timbers - mounted on eaves wall. The boiler firing's not a problem there's just a constant whine when the pumps running I know it's not gonna be silent but I can't imagine it should be making this noise - BG coming this afternoon so will see what they say.

Thanks
Shaun

BG rang - couldn't make it today - engineer sickness and too many gas emergencies - rebooked for wednesday. :(

As someone who regularly works on Isars, my advice to you is start saving up about £12 per month in expectancy of the PCB going wrong in around 18 months.

Good luck

Well I am shocked I can honestly say that I have never had any problems with these

MMM maybe we could be wrong

you have been very lucky, i have replaced more pcbs on this model than all others put together

I've never had a board go though I have had a few with poor connections. Had a few with actuators and of course blocked condensate. That said the early ones were electrically inept (as in moth other ways), but I too thought that was sorted with the major overhaul. Mind you saying that I don't have a great number on my patch.

Try bleeding the pump to exclude air from the bearings :!:

I have fitted many of these boilers, some in attics/lofts and it usually takes a few hours for the air to be excluded and it to go almost silent. If BG fitted this one did they fit it to an existing heating system? Did they flush it properly? Could there be debris in the pump, which is a 6m head pump, recently changed from the Wilo type to Circulating pumps (Myson) brand. The pump runs for about 2 minutes after the demand from CH is removed, the auto bypass valve should take care of this flow if you have zone valves (>150 sq. m house)

As for unreliability, I've had 3 pcb failures over 5 years over the whole m-series and HE range (about 100 boilers), 2 on isars and 1 icos, and 1 pump failure after about 1 week (Wilo pump). Two PCBs were m-series old type, one was newer HE series which fired twice, then failed during commissioning! Ideal, to their credit, came out on a Bank Holiday Monday to replace it.

Hope this helps...

Ok - the job finally got sorted - new pump head fitted. The impeller had some damage like it had been running against something - said it wasn't caused by the fittings on the boiler must have been done before being fitted.

Quieter now - as long as it wasn't caused by the fittings and the new one doesn't do the same we should be ok.

Well - the heating came on this evening and the howling is now louder than ever. - Guess the new pumps rubbing somewhere as well - have to get BG back again :-( - wished I left my old back boiler in now - it was quieter.

Dear Shaun,

Just had one of these fitted and when heating is on there is a constant whining, it wakes us in the morning and can be heard all over the house . Did you get yours sorted out?

I would advise to start your own new topic, as this is approx 2 years old, the OP probably is not still around on here
