I have tried unscrewing outer chrome ring, lifting top off push buttons ( 2 incl economy mode), prising outer chrome ring up-all to no avail. The outer chrome ring tops a tube with vertical ridges and it looks as though there must be a tool to unscrew this. I have managed a couple of anticlockwise turns with some pliers but am no closer to releasing the lid. Any comments please?

Not sure which one for certain you have but most just unscrew anticlockwise, there's a screwed end about 1 1/2 " long goes into the syphon.

remove push buttons
unscrew retaining screw at the bottom of the exposed tube
lift off

Have you removed the push buttons? With one depressed the other can be flicked up with a small screwdriver. It is simple but not really obvious. Underneath them is the holding plastic bolt head. The buttons have rods that fit into holes in the flush mechanism.
