Problem with hot water supply. Tanks in loft/gravity feed. Central heating is fine but tap water only warm. any ideas what the problem might be? Boiler is old circa 1979.

First thing would be check little tank in the loft
If its empty the waggle the ball valve.
If its full ( 100 mm + ) then drain 2 litres from a rad bleed screw and see if the level in the tank falls. If not then blocked feed pipe at junction with system.
Amusingly the Vulcan is probably the most reliable boiler in the world! And one of the most inefficient !!!
Start saving up for a modern efficient condensing boiler.
