Hi all, I have a slight slope to my back garden, around 40cm drop over 700cm width. I need to replace my fence at the back so I'd like to level the garden more whilst I'm at it.

I could really do with some ideas for the retaining wall (which won't be seen by anyone) or a cost effective way to extend the existing slope up to the required level?

I did consider making a retaining wall from sleepers but this seems like a bit of a waste of money if it's not even seen? It's around 20 meters long.

Quickblock type to build retaining wall?

Lock together then pour concrete

how far is the fence from the house ?
and in the first Pic, is that the fence with your house to the left and the steep slope to the right, and can you buid/alter this side of the fence?

Fence from the house is around 9m. That's correct in that picture.

Well I'm not totally sure about building there but it is a bit of no mans land that will never have anything on it....and I'd really just be building on/just over my boundary if that's OK?

Reclaimed paving slabs can be obtained free if you have suitable transport and set vertically, broken ones can be thrown in to build up the ground.

you would also be burying the bottom of your fence - I did something simillar with mine (only 8 or 9 " deep) but I made the drop before the fence. Just made some little stubby posts and some tantalised timber behind it to shore up the grass, must have been there 20 years ? - even at a foot high as per you proposal I doubt there will be liitle weight pushing sideways (unless you keep bouncing up and down on top of it to see if its strong enough) the roots of the grass will hold it all together.

you could always fill with gravel between the shoring up and the fence, or just let it fill up with leaves like mine
