Identifying and repairing lime mortar

How can I tell if the mortar between brickwork is lime mortar?

I'm currently exposing and restoring a Victorian fireplace, as the photos attached and want to repoint and repair the mortar but have no idea if it's lime or cement mortar.

The house was built in 1900 if that helps. Any advice would be appreciated!

Looks like lime mortar to me. Most likely on any pre1919 building. (1919 is when cavity walls came in) Where are you? Nationally you want NHTG for all things traditional building skills: http://www.the-nhtg.org.uk/
