He's bang on.
Reducing them and eliminating them is the way to go.
The problem is where do you start, the whole system is a mess and have heard it's cheaper to leave it alone, not only dole cheats are moonlighting, mp's, tax loophole that allows wealthy people to benefit, cash in hand, it's never ending!

There's thousands of jobs going. Tens of thousands.
Thats why thousands of immigrants are being let into the country.
To fulfill those jobs that lazy uk citizens won't do.
Any factory I know off is full of foreigners. Without them productivity would fail and factories would shut down.
If there were no jobs or oppurtunities foreigners wouldn't come here.

Until the uk citizen improves his work ethic priniciples and gets off his back side then the current situation will continue.
A good kickstart would be remove the benefits.
We only employ foreigners.
The chinese basically told eu officials when they went cap in hand for a bail out to go and take a running jump and that the western social model is unsustainable and reform is needed.
I'd agree with that conclusion.

There's one obvious flaw in your logic. How does a guy with a family and a mortgage live on the minimum wage?

He leaves his £25k of yearly benefits to take a job for £10k? He loses his house and maybe his family? What planet are you on?

Who is going to do that? And do you really think that when the immigrants get married and have kids that they will live on minimum wage when there are £25,000 worth of benefits going for free? And he can work in the black economy?

Are you crazy?

How does a guy with a family and a mortgage live on the minimum wage?

The same way the chinese do. In a mud hut.
Its called living with in your means and one day will have to happen.
The current situation can't go on and you know it.

I know it. You know it, the governments know it - but it's a big secret. London - twinned with Athens.

And so the solution is presumably to throw people out on the streets and make them destitute

When the money markets realise that the UK is going to default on its debts - what do you think will happen? No borrowing means no benefits.

So we're doomed. End of.

Think I'll get an old horsecart to put my belongings on and traipse along to, well where exactly? Where will we all be able to refugee to?

Are you including me in that sweeping generalisation?

I'm unemployed; I'm 58, and I've been out of work for 5 years. In the course of that 5 years, I've applied for any and every job I thought I had a chance of getting. So far, I've not had a single reply, let alone an interview. I'm not "workshy", I haven't made a "lifestyle decision" to live on benefits, it's been forced on me by circumstances entirely beyond my control.

I'm not resigned to spending the remainder of my "working" life on benefits, but any realistic assessment of my situation has to conclude that it's a possibility, if not a probability.

I know there are people out there who deliberately set out to exploit the system, but I do not believe, for one minute, that they represent the majority of the long-term unemployed; and I, for one, deeply resent being tarred with that brush.

A good kickstart would be remove the benefits
I get Jobseeker's Allowance, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Benefit. Together, they add up to about £7K a year.
Please explain how you think denying me that basic minimum I need to survive on is going to improve my chances of getting a job.

There's thousands of jobs going. Tens of thousands.
Maybe there are, in your neck of the woods, but not round here there ain't.

Five years ago, you could pick up a copy of the local paper on "jobs" day; on the outside it would say "100s of jobs inside", and inside, that would literally be true. You could expect to find 8-12 double sided pages of display ads, with 10-20 jobs on each side, and at least a couple of pages of Classifieds. Around 200-400 vacancies per issue.

Over the last 3 years, that number has steadily declined; and for the last 2 years or so, there have rarely been more than one or two pages of jobs advertised, and rarely more than half a page of Classifieds. They removed the strapline from the front page about 18 months ago.

I don't care what the statistics say, that is the reality that I, and thousands like me, have to deal with.

I really feel sorry for you and as you know you're not alone, somehow I can understand why some of them are mocking the system just to put the butter on the table

My wife was lay off last November and doesn't get any help and yet she still have to sign on fortnightly

Yes that's correct, she was part-time therefore didn't earn enough before so didn't pay any NI, so really don't see the point of starting now!

IDS is a curiously vain man.

He was born George Smith

(full name George Iain Duncan Smith) and he dropped his first name, and tries very hard (with some success) to make people think that his family name is double-barrelled "Duncan-Smith"

Perhaps the same "Smith" is too common for him.

I notice that Wikipedia refers to him as "Duncan Smith," the entry looks as if it was written by one of his supporters.

In his entire life, he spent six years in the army, and (up to) eleven years in industry. Apart from that he has spent his life as an MP.

As an ex-Sandurst ex-Guards officer, he has all the understanding and sympathy for those less fortunate that himself that you would expect.
