My iMac has the the latest up to date OS which can be installed thanks to Apple not allowing any further updates. the OS is OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5.
Apple in their wisdom will not allow any further upgrades and the ageing iMac is stuck in this unacceptable time warp. I have issues with the iMac interface to Gmail but I have adapted to the problems it causes. My present problem relates to PDF files my bank sends me via On-Line Banking, but my 'Steam Driven' Mac refuses to open the PDF files. The same files can be opened on my mobile banking app, so there is no problem with my banking software.
I have searched for a solution via GOOGLE and various solutions are suggested one of which is restarting my iMac in 'Safe Mode'. There then follows a pile of gobbledegook which is totally unintelligible to me and to be honest scares the living daylights out of me, referring to uploaded application software software which will probably be deleted. If ever I carry out what I would call 'Advances Problem Solutions', all other sorts of problems are introduced such as access to important features and all sorts of other unforeseen issues, so I am reluctant to attempt that as a solution.
Has anyone 'Smart Arse' out there got any ideas for a solution.
If you reply, please bare in mind you are replying to a 'PC Numpty', so please treat me gently.

I am no expert but their is an app. called PDFgear if you can download it with your old operating system. It can be set to open downloaded PDFs automatically.

Open pdf in Google Doc's or Microsoft one drive
Hi Wayners, All the versions of Google Doc's Apps I have tried to download won't download as the version of my Mac is to old.
Apple score again with forcing users to buy a New Mac. If I do by a new Laptop it will be a WIndows Machine.

PDF Gear will not down load onto my Mac as my version is 10.10.5 and PDF gear requires 10.14 or later. My Steam Driven Mac is giving me all sorts of issues as Apple in their wisdom won't allow updates on older machines. WIndows Beckons

I'm guessing it's about 17 years old. If you have acrobat that should open most pdf files.
Try opening in the preview app or by highlighting the file and pressing the space bar

Nearly right on the iMac age. it is 14 years old, still working OK but a nightmare to use now as Apple just does't support it. This PDF viewing is a typical issue. I am going to downgrade to a WIndows laptop soon but the problem then will be transporting all of my files from the iMac to a WIndows machine .

You don't download anything. Use browser to login Google or Microsoft.
Chrome browser or edge browser would be best but anything should work. Whatever browser you're using.

If you're Mac is out of date consider sticking Chrome OS Flex on it.

As per @Wayners ' post. Upload the file to cloud storage (eg Google or MS), then let your browser open the PDF.

If you intend to use 15+ year old hardware, you will find similar problems with Windows.
Using up to date software requires reasonably recent hardware.

Just looked at the process of installing Chrome OS Flex. The process scares the life out of me. I could envisage me getting into very deep water very quickly to the point of drowning. It is beyond my experience and knowledge to even attempt it. Even simple questions of which iMac's are certified are stated as being Apple iMac 11.2 and 12.1, my iMac overview states it is OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.5, which suggests to me that my iMac is not certified for Chrome OS Flex. The installation of OS Flex requires a USB boot and then describes that possible unrecoverable issues can develop if OS X is installed, even under trial conditions.
At which point I experienced an uncontrolled Bowel Evacuation.
