Hi, when installing an immersion heater circuit is it acceptable to have the switch in the airing cupboard beside the cylinder or should there be another one in a more obvious position? Also at what point does a roofspace become a converted attic in regard to wiring mains wired smoke detectors? Is it only when there is a fixed staircase leading up to it? Many thanks.

It's fine to have the switch inside the airing cupboard itself, with a length of immersion flex to the element itself.

Perhaps someone could answer the roof space and smoke alarm question - personally I'll put an interlinked smoke alarm at the apex of the roof, so if there's a fire in the loft, I'll know sooner than later.

You must have a switch adjacent to the heater, but other than that it's up to you. There is no requirement to have a second switch, they are just installed for convenience.

Not really an electrical question, but I'd imagine it becomes a converted roof space after you apply for building regulations approval, convert the loft into a habitable space and the man from building control signs the job off.

But even if its not a habitable space, depending on the exact nature of the risks one or more 'void space' dectectors might be specified, although this would be un-usual on domestic smoke detector installations, although if there is any electricial equipment in the roof space such as solar PV inverter this may justify it even for a domstic house.
