Just a quick question......

My girlfriend's flat has a mains powered smoke alarm with battery back up.

One day (in annoyance at it not going silent!) she pulled it off the ceiling and cut the wires to it (after turning off the electricity).

Now, the property has two flats.....

The smoke alarm is connected via wiring with a blue, brown and white wire, which is obviously not 'domestic' wiring.

Would this alarm and the one in the flat above be on their own dedicated circuits or wired into one of the domestic circuits?

If the flat is one in a building converted into flats ( as apposed to purpose built flats ) then the local council may have required the flats to have interlinked smoke alarms. This to ( maybe ) ensure all residents are alerted to a fire in another flat and thus get out before the fire spreads.

They would (should ) be supplied then from a "landlords" supply and not from any of the flat's supplies. Cutting that cable may have knocked out all the interlinked alarms and maybe blown the fuse so even repairing the cut cable may not restore the interlinking of the alarms.

Not a very sensible thing to do - she probably has left the installation unsafe.

The white wire is normally the interconnect wire - so it sounds as if she has cut the alarms own cables possibly leaving them live

She needs to get an electrician in to sort out this mess immediately as she could be putting herself and her neighbour in danger - and not just from fire protection either.
