Hi guys,

I have a fairly new (a few years old) Ideal hot water tank.

I had to replace my immersion heater about 8 weeks ago as it was tripping the switch. The one previous to that was 11 months old.
the switch tripped again and i noticed that the thermostat in the tube was wet. now the switch has tripped again and again, there is water getting into the thermostat sleeve/tube. What is going on??

Obviously, the thermostat pocket is leaking, unless water is entering via some other route. Even then, I'm surprised it is tripping, because the water needs to find its way into the stat itself, which is completely sealed at the bottom end.
yes i would have thought so too.. the electrical area of the immersion is bone dry. this will be the third immersion in 10 weeks or so. the first two were the same brand.. hardly a manufacturing defect though??

Is that (they) top mounted Immersions?, if so, the stat pocket is renewed each time you renew the immersion as its part of it.

Is the element one inserted into the cylinder from the top, or from the side? Can you post a photo, of the cylinder/element boss?

I think both types come with integral stats, the top mounted certainly does, the one below is a dual element immersion where the (one) stat switches either element by switching the neutral, the stat pocket length is normally only the length of the short ~ 11ins element so unlikely to foul on the heating coil (if fitted) but a single element sometimes has the pocket the same ~ 19/36ins length as the element so this might be fouling the heating coil and damaging it, its difficult to imagine water quality affecting the pocket in such a short time, wonder who's the Immersion manufacturer.

As above, just replace the complete immerser. Unless you men you've already done that?
