Immersion Heater Thermostats

Hi,
Could anyone tell me if you should rely on the built in thermostats regarding immersion heaters as I have heard they are very temperamental, or should they have one strapped to the tank, or are those type only for boiler heating systems?

As far as I know the strap on ones are for controlling the hw on a heating system. Stick to the immersion stats and set by experimentation of how hot the water is.
