Immersion heater

Hi All,

Wonder if any of you can offer advice to a keen newbie.
My Immersion heater died last weekend. I replaced the thermostat in the copper and sure enough when I metered it out no continuity. Water heating slightly but not hot enough. The stat is set to 60 degree C there is power going through the element. I'm thinking that I need to change the copper itself. Problem being I can't get the &&***ing thing out.

I have tried penetrating oil I have a box spanner but no joy. Any magic tricks of the trade that I could try to get it loose. I could do without damaging the tank

have you tried a bit of heat on it.
don't drain the tank until you have slackened it or it will twist.

Box spanner and a set of 24's just go very very easy!!!!! watch carefully for signs of the cylinder twisting.

Alternatively you can apply heat with a blowtorch to create a bit of expansion although this does tend to soften the copper up so you need to be even more careful.

Otherwise its brute force and ignorance!! Its one of those things that is more of a knack and you cant teach it!! lol

Empty a few litres of water from the drain cock.

Heat to soften any paste at the joint. Watch for setting fire to insulation. Just play blowlamp on middle of the brass casting, and let it conduct through to the threaded part.

Best spanner is a cast one you can hit with a hammer.

Next best is a box spanner with a strong bar , hit that.
