replaced an immersion 2 months ago. everything fine till last night. not heating up water. used my volt meter to check electrical connections.OK between neutral and live where live is wired into the stat but no current between neutral and where live (prewired) exits stat and runs to live clamp on heater. All connections (clamp down and presoldered)are fine.

Presume stat is faulty???? Am I correct??? if so:

do I bugger about cursing sweating and so on taking the whole thing out and getting a replacement??? OR can I just change the faulty component (presumably the stat!?)

You have nothing to lose by changing the stat but if i get called out for a dodgy immersion i change the whole thing.

You're confusing your use of terms, at least, with the meter. I hope you're measurng voltage. If you measure current your meter might explode..!

Put meter across the ELEMENT. If you get volts there the stat's ok.
Turn it all off and measure the element resistance on Ohms lowest range. Should be around 20 oHMS.

With it all off again, measuring Ohms across the stat should go between very high and very low when it clicks.
