Hi there,

Recently my immersion switch (i.e The bath/sink on/off switch) has started getting very hot (too hot to touch) when it is turned on. I opened it up to have a look and all the wires seem to be in place correctly though it was a little awkward to check properly without unscrewing all the wires. Some of the plastic casing inside seems to have perished somewhat, probably melting due to the heat being generated.

What is the most likely cause of this problem ?

Is it best just to replace the switch at this stage?

thanks,

reg

Yes - replace the switch.Isolate the supply first.Note which wires go where before you begin and make sure that the cables are soundly made into the new switch.Remake any wires that appear heat damaged and care is need to ensure no wires are pinched trapped when refitting.
The switch you need is a 20 Amp double pole if, as is usual, the heater is on its own radial circuit. If, and it's less common, it is spurred off the ring then you will need a fused connection unit.(this method was more common years ago)

A high resistance connection probably caused by a loose terminal screw or damaged cores.

Turn off the electricity, remove the switch (noting where EVERYTHING goes first) Get a new switch and bigger backbox. Cut back to some fresh cable and reconnect.

EDIT:
