Bodd's offer was self-deprecating humour, because (as most realise) he is not the best at spelling and grammar himself.
These sayings are simply linguistic pauses, irritating or not. "To be honest", "Like you say", "At the end of the day". Just false starts and fillers. They tend not to appear in writing, because the writer has time to fashion the sentence.

Waving hands around when talking - 'Talking Italian'...
Went to a wedding where English chap married a girl of Italian extract; he gave half his speech in English (no hand waving) and half in Italian complete with lots of hand waving to add to the expressions...
His language coach had taught him well with both the verbals and hands!
