Indesit wg1034t won\\\'t drain

Our Indesit wg1034t (4 years old) will not drain. It washes through the cycle and gets to position 5 then attempts to drain. The motor whirs but no water is released. The machine then sits still and gets stuck. If you set the dial to dain only it does the same.

Any ideas as to the cause of the problem ?

either the pump is not working or the filter (if fitted) is blocked
