The question says it all really.

I have just put in a new toilet. Everything seems fine, but it does have a constant trickle into the bowl. It's hardly noticible... but I noticed and now can't unsee it.

Is there a simple fix for this? Is it something to do with the float?

Everything is brand new.

If the water level in the cistern reaches the overflow level of the flush valve ,it's an issue with the float valve. If it doesn't it's an issue with the seating of the flush valve seals.

The overflow is not being reached, but water ends up covering the float ‍♂️

Your pic doesn't show the overflow tube ,which is an integral part of the flush valve.
Show us a pic looking directly down into the cistern

I have attached the main view now
