I have been trawling the web to see what the recommended practice is regards the installation of a decorative hearth.

This is already installed but would like to find out if it is installed correctly.

The concrete constructional hearth was there already, nice flat and level.

The multifuel stove supported on 3" legs so a good 75mm airgap under the stove. (probably about 100mm to underside of ash pan)

The decorative hearth is made from black marble, the top face one solid slab 1000mm by 1300mm by 30mm thick with 30mm thick downstands glued round the edges making it 90mm overall height. There are several bracing pieces glued inside to make the whole thing rigid, and it weighs a bloody tonne!.

Question:- How should this be bedded down? Should the voids underneath (ie between the bracing pieces) be filled or not, should it be guled down to the solid constructional hearth underneath, or use a lime mortar, or a silicone type material? Should it be cut into four to allow expansion? Or on a bed of cement? Or just laid on a fireproof board to allow it to move with expansion?

As I was saying there doesn't appear to be anything anywhere on the web that I can find, what's your guys experiences?

The hearth was made some 8 years ago by a professional stone masonary company who specialise in this kind of thing, but they no longer exist so I can't ask them!

TIA.
