i want to open up my kitchen its a single skin of brickwork 11 foot long above a non load bearing wall its 12 inches away from the wall above how much would you suggest either side of the rsj and would i get away with a timber beam or something liter cheers for any ideas

You mentioned a non-load bearing wall but you're also talking about installing an RSJ. So... is this wall your removing load bearing or non-load bearing? You may require building regulation approval and if so, they may ask for details/calculations of the proposed beams, which would also provide details on the bearings either end.
