Hi

We currently have a gas cooker, but we have just bought an electric cooker will we be able to install this ourselves, it mentions that it will require hard wiring by an electrician could someone tell me what this means.

Thanks

Firstly, it will depend on the the kw rating and the manufacturers instructions that came with it.

As you state there is a requirement to hard wire it then you will need the following.

Depending on the size of the cooker (kw) you will probably need a spare 32 Amp MCB at your Consumer Unit.
You will then have to run either 6 or 10mm cable from the consumer unit to a 45 Amp Dual Pole cooker switch - which should be positioned within 2 metres of your cooker.
From the cooker switch you run the same size cable to a cooker connection unit and then connect from this to the cooker.
You will probably need to have your new circuit additionally protected by an RCD.
Lastly you will have to notify the Local Authority Buidling Control, pay their fee, before you start.
Alternatively call an electrician. ;)

First question - do you already have a cooker circuit you can connect to?

If no, or if the switch and/or outlet plate are in the wrong place, what riveralt said is good.

If yes, you should be able to connect it yourself.
