What is the best way of installing chrome compression pipe and fittings to avoid leaks and to not damage the chrome when tightening fittings? Thanks

I put a tiny rub of vaseline on thread. Just thred! A smear.
Then nut can be tightened by hand nearly all the way. Just nip up.
