Or a laser.
Use anything you want as long as it is makes a vertical line.
Sometimes when we are fitting a d.p. near a corner, we simply measure off the brickwork.
Its cast iron effect downpipes I'm putting up. Were the clips are on the sockets. So they can only be clipped were you join the pipes? Seems a fair distance between clips.
Use a rainwater adaptor or sleeve. There are soft rubber universal adaptors available specifically for this job.
I take it we are talking at the bottom of the d/p and not at the running outlet?
by placing the down pipe in place then a small self tapping screw in the side to hold it or some glue an activator then pop the clips on the pipe they will stay where you putthem.
then a 6ft level on pipe mark holes then drill plug and screw working your day down the pipe it works iv done this many times and still do.
That's fine as long as the d/p is not bent and a lot of them are, particularly the round section d/p. A bent pipe and a short level can yield poor results. Not everyone owns a six foot level!
If you have a scribed centre line on the wall then you can use this line to mark your drill holes each side.
What we do is pop a clip onto a down pipe, squeeze the clip slightly so that it is gripping the pipe.
We then measure the distance between the screw holes on the squeezed clip. We then take this measurement to the centre line and mark out the clip drill holes, evenly marking each side of the line.
You can pre drill all your holes then assemble the d/p. Also the d/p will be secure because of the grip from the d/p brackets because of the squeezy-squeeze method.
