Hi everyone,

Moved into a new property this year. Hadn’t appreciated the reputation bedrooms have for being cold or placed above garages! Our bedroom is circa 3 degrees cooler than the other rooms in the house and with a newborn enroute - I’m keen to rectify this as much as possible.

The garage ceiling is concrete block and beam, I’ll attach a photo.

Would this first point be to fill this with PIR? I assume I could batten from the beams, then add 50-100mm PIR?

Any other quick wins?

Thanks,
Wazza

I've used similar stuff myself but the combustability worries me. Just out of curiosty I put a lighter to it, it goes up in flames like a piece of newspaper, I was shocked. Personally, I'll use something different in future, rockwool maybe,

There should be insulation above the garage ceiling - is it not plasterboard-ed?

I had similar problem, but cutting a hole revealed some insulation, so it wasn't the classic cause. I cut another hole in the bedroom ceiling, and there was approx 1" of fibreglass! I upped it to 12" and the difference was vast.

If you have anything flammable in the garage then use rockwall.

Or take up a floorboard and see what insulation is in there.

What about the bedroom ceiling - is that properly insulated. If it’s a pitched roof maybe you could see from the loft

Naively, I assumed all PIR would be 'firerated' to a degree and would be safe to stick anywhere - how wrong was I!

Above the garage ceiling is our bedroom, so it has wooden floor joists with (what looks to be) PIR underneath. The thickness, i'd need to check.

The bedroom ceiling is vaulted - adding to our woes. Looks great, lots of space - but also a huge void to heat. The only way of seeing whats in the ceiling would be to cut it - not against the idea but if there are quick wins first, i'd like to attempt those.

As far as I know, there is nothing that says you can't use it. The board I used was marketed as having fire retardents, expensive stuff as well, but it literally lights like a piece of newspaper, I regret using it now, should have just sand/cemented wall. Everything these days is about energy efficency and such, but at what cost ?
