Hi all,

we're about to sand and wax the ground floor of our house From past experience you can often get drafts up through the cracks between the floorboards so any ideas about how to insulate from underneath and still keep the required bits and bobs ventilated ?

Access should be OK as we have to replace some joists anyway so can get into the crawl space ?

Thanks

Rigid insulation sitting on battens, or mineral/glass wool on chicken wire. If you only put the insulation between the joists there will still be plenty of airspace beneath.

Thanks Deluks

How is this going to affect the air flow around the joists and under-side of floorboards. Seems that these options will stop this happening ?

Cheers

Not really a problem under the house. There won't be such an issue with condensation under the ground floor that there would be in a roofspace. Warm air rises up, taking any moisture that may be present in the room with it, it won't head downwards and settle under the floorboards.

There will possible be moisture coming up from the ground, but this area is ventilated anyway it will be neutralised before having a chance to condensate on the insulation or timber.

In any case, all the rooms in the house should have adequate ventilation as good practice/regs. Extractor's in kitchen/bathroom, trickle vents in windows, that sort of thing.
