I live in a 1930's semi. It's brick build cavity wall in standard construction. I've got loft insulation and double glazing, but not cavity wall insulation (I might get this at a later date). Renovating the house is an ongoing project.
The house has a bay window at the front, featuring in the lounge and also the master bedroom. In the lounge, beneath the window the wall is a full 12" cavity, but the wall in the master bedroom is not.
This entire wall is single skin brick, thus with no insulation. The double glazing units sit on top of this brick and there is therefore no window board whatsoever.
The master bedroom is the next major project in the house. The bedroom is very cold, and I want to rectify that. Currently the radiator is a little undersized, but that notwithstanding, the major problem is heat loss through that wall. Therefore I want to insulate it.
I can see two ways of doing this:- affix 4" studs to the wall, infill with mineral wool insulation, and plasterboard over the top, thus also creating the thickness required for a window board.
Or, I've seen available several tailor made products such as plasterboard with integrated foam insulation.
What system would you recommend to solve my problem and why?
