I have black mold on a bedroom wall. I don’t know whether this is condensation, dampness or dry/wet rot. It has now appeared on the ceiling of the bedroom. There is a strong smell of dampness in the room. We are using a dehumidifier in the room, which is taking out about 5 pints of water over a three day period. My husband is physically disabled, so I will have to employ a specialist to deal with the problem; but I don’t know who to contact. could anyone give me advice?

Condensation is generally caused by the use of the property, rather than a defect, or the property itself
Search on here or Google for condensation prevention ... there are loads of posts
Heating and ventilating are key things, and minimising moisture production in the property
Only once you have tried to deal with the cause, should you then do the treatment and redecoration work
It's a fine balance. Some things may be obvious and easily done, others will be trial and error

Thanks for your reply Woody. Do you think it is worth carrying on using the dehumidifier. The trickle vent is always opened as is the window.
This is the only room in the house where the radiator is not under the window, could this be part of the problem?
I am a terrible worrier and have been told that this could travel throughout the whole house. Sorry for being a pest, I will look at google and the other posts on this site.

Yes use the dehumidifier
Condensation will tend to settle on the coldest part of the coldest wall in the house where air circulation is minimal. If you have never had any mould in other places, it probably wont spread unless you start making much more moisture
I would not bother opening the window in this room unless you need to, as the dehumidifier will do its job, and you don't want to be letting cold moist air in unnecessarily. Leave the vent open though
If you can. put the dehumidifier near to the corner where any mould is.
Wipe existing mould, or spray the wall with a fungicide and see if it comes back after you have read up on this and taken any other action

Help please re. above problem.
Followed all the advice given, the black mould has now came back after 4 weeks. The bedroom concerned has wallpaper on the walls so we are going to strip the walls. Does anyone have any other ideas what to do next.
