Internal aircon unit condensate pipe

We're having an internal aircon unit fitted at work, no external compressor as we're in a conservation area, so it's all internal apart from the vents and a condensate pipe. The builder says this pipe needs to discharge into a downpipe, which looks unsightly, and I reckon as long as it slopes down and away from the building it should be OK without, especially as it will only be used for a couple of months per year.

Any thoughts?
