Hi all
I'd very much appreciate your advice on how to prepare my internal doors for painting. They are typical 1980's smooth wood veneer finish. About 10 years ago I oiled them - with teak oil, if I remember rightly - to bring up the shine. This worked OK, but now I'm having a nightmare trying to prep them for an eggshell finish!
Washing down: I've washed them down about 6 times with strong solutions of sugar soap, but they're still leaching a dark brown stain onto my cloth. The shine is gradually getting cut back, though they're currently a horrid mix of shiny and matt. Do I just keep going with the sugar soap until the colour stops seeping out?
Getting a decent key: What should I use to sand them ready for painting? A friend suggested fine wire wool, which I've spot-tried but I'm not sure if it's the right approach. Should I be using wet & dry or a fine sandpaper?
Sealing: I've read lots of positive comments on this forum about Zinsser Bin for sealing in oil-based stains, but I'm worried about making a gloopy mess of it, thus waving goodbye to my hope of super-smooth eggshell-finished doors. What would you recommend, and should it be applied with a roller or brush?
Sorry for so many questions, but I'm at a loss with this. Would very much appreciate your help!
