Can anyone tell me if an IT department of a local town council check up on your internet usage in regards to length of time, frequency and which user is online when logged on to a common password.

are you talking about your work-owned PC? Or one on a company network?

If they want to, they can tell what any PC is looking at, and when, and can record it.

If you have been studying football, ebay or pron at work then sooner or later you can expect to be in trouble.

Passwords should not be shared.

Thanks for the reply JohnD, the computer is part of the council intranet. Council employees are allowed to surf at lunch time.

The council should have an Acceptible Use Policy that they make you read and possibly sign. This would make you aware of what is acceptable to surf. They will almost certainly have some kind of automated monitoring of the internet surfing and block access to certain web sites. However there is not going to be somone who sits there looking in real time at the internet traffic. They will probably check the logs now and again using some kind of software to check for porn and the like.

Its quite easy for them to log/view EVERY key stroke you make, should they wish........

Anyone can do this if they want, not just big company's.

On a lot smaller scale I use Radmin on my laptop and office PC.

When away from the office I can see exactly what is on my office PC screen at any time and access all programmes etc.

We're watching you, johnwr
