Hi, I'm looking for 3 cheap ip pan & tilt cameras to read the digits on a gas meter, water meter & two pressure gauges that are all in my loft/attic as i'm 70+ & can see an accident coming with extension ladders & climbing up there for readings. I would prefer to see the images on my computer if pos. I tried a cheap £20 one, & very good for security, but no good on close-up. Any suggestions?. Thanks.
PS: I looked at some document cams, but not sure if any are LAN or wifi.

You might be better off with three or four really cheap cctv cameras as a kit - one for each dial but not movable?
The problem would be finding a camera that works close up enough to read the dials.
The set up goes through a box that could stay in the loft, sending hdmi to a monitor that could be in a bedroom/airing cupboard. The camera selection can be changed via a long usb mouse.
I guess it can be viewed on an iPad.

Buying from Amazon would allow you to try the close up capability of the cameras. Then return any product that doesn’t do what you hope? Bear in mind that it’s presumably dark in the loft so an IR source or switched light source might be needed?

I have an endoscope that connected to an iPhone. If long enough, a few of them could be utilised “passively” with the phone end through the ceiling. No idea if that’s practical.

+1 on cheap endoscope cameras. They have a fixed focal distance of a few cm and sufficient resolution for reading dials. They also have built-in illumination.

smart meters are available for all of these, maybe except maybe the pressure gauges?

as for cameras the distance from the meter or gauge and the light under which it needs to operate and are they close together or all over the loft?

The gas meter is one we fitted a long time back as we are on LPG & there isn't a smart gauge for my one, but we could change the meter. The water meter was a smart one, but had a mind of its own & would often turn off or go to 20%, so i just changed it for an old-fashioned digit one as we dont think the new Anglian water smart one is reading right..So! i will try a couple of these £22 ones below. on offer at AliExpress.

cant comment on the camera, but a budget hikvision ezviz camera https://www.amazon.co.uk/EZVIZ-Secu...441158114772304775-B08GQ3M4DD-&hvexpln=0&th=1 might be suitable

I would echo the comment about getting a smart meter. No cost and usage is conveniently available.
Could be an idea, but it will cost a minimum of £ 70 for the meter, £ 40 for the receiver, and approx. £ 100 for fitting = £210 or £22 for a camera & £188 towards my gas bill.

I dont know what you have I have no distances and I have no lighting information, so I may as well pick things at random. and hope I stumble across the solution.I dont see the dials/ meter faces. I cant be cretain that the image you have is wrong because the camera is the wrong spec of that its setup incorrectly.

I can take you to a million different sites and how cameras set up correctly for the job and the same camera doing something similar and not setup correctly, I can also show you the wrong camera for the job that is wanted from the customer.

lots of posts across the net buy a camera and dont have it properly specified you will find it either over kill or not capable.

when you zoom in some have automatic focusing and some manual, how crisp you get what depends on these factors being optimised

keep picking things at random means a lot of sending back if you dot get the right kit specified and tuned in.

Recent conversation over a CCT request:-
I want 4 cameras how much?
What do you want them to be able to do?
I want hik something decent?
Hik have thousands of cameras what do you want them to do, we work to DORI, explained what that was, so what do you want it to do?
I want 4 cmaeras something decent?
Sorry but we dont do 4 cameras, we specify for the job they need to do, including distance they want which part of DORI to apply and how long they want storage and what the lighting conditions are, that will determine the NVR as we dont do analougue nd then how long do you want the footage to last and that determines the HDD size?
Never mind don't bother?

Professionally speaking, being offered 2,4,8 camera systems of the same camera on 1TB HDD is not they way to do security cameras, but you need to get the right solution for your budget. I saw a budget system the other day in a cafe that want working, got it fixed, it was capable of ID at the point furthest from the camera that was possible, and day or night, which is perfect for them, but they are all the same camera and the area covered by each camera is relatively small.

I have seen sites with 16 cameras and each one being an absolute pile of rubbish for the job they wanted it to do.

They had a small budget, at the time, set up one camera and upgraded to HVR, to take old cameras and the new one along with the ability to upgrade all the cameras later, they have caught an offender they were arrested, and awaiting court proceedings to take place, the problem they had has gone away as the word got out that they will be caught. That single camera saw the suspect arrested, charged. other cmeras have been ugraded as a result, because the right camera for the job makes all the difference.

Unfortunately justice is dam slow, waiting for the court case as until then cant publish the images.
The customer was lets say were extremely happy with, the police have caught and arrested the offender, they were even more impressed the evidence is good enough to go to court! But better still for them the problem they had has gone away because the right camera did its job properly as it was set up properly!

That starts with right information to specify the camera, then it setting up correctly, its as simple as that!
