i have a russell hobbs steam generator iron 12978 and from yesterday the steam is now coming out through the lead from the base of the water tank what could the problem be please help

A seal of some kind has perished? 
thanks !!!!can it be fixed or that is the end of the iron? 
You would be the best judge of that as it's currently in your possession!
