Is 6mm hardiebacker on for stud wall

Or is it just for going onto a solid surface? For shower tiles.

I assume I'm going to want it up as against the water proof barrier, so need to get the stud in the right place .

Do you mean the wall or the hardiebacker?

The wall will be strong, building with 4x2s. I could put extra wood in ...

I had a look in B&Q and the 12mm seemed very heavy to handle so hoped 6mm might be OK...
 
I'd use 12mm if its going straight onto the studwork, or 6mm if its overboarding existing plasterboard/brick.
