Hi,

Having asked questions before and had quick and helpful replies I thought I'd try again. I've got a back-boiler central heating system with a Baxi 401 boiler and a Potterton EP2002 programmer and all of my radiators bar one have TRVs on them. Would I benefit by getting a room thermostat fitted, in my hall for example? Is it a requirement to have one or a nicety? Finally, can anyone recommend a wireless thermostat and programmer that would work together as I'd prefer not have boxes and wires all over the place!

Once again, thanks for your help and advice so far! david

A room thermostat is a requirement on all new installations and boiler changes, but not in your situation.

The Honeywell analogue wireless room stat is very good and very simple to fit and use.

Honeywell CM921 or 927

The analogue will cost about £80 and the CM927 about £87 bought online.

The CM921/927 is only a single channel device so it only controls the CH time and temperature. You will need either to keep the existing EP2002 or purchase a cheap single channel timer to control HW times.

Do you have a cylinder thermostat to control HW temperature?

Thank you for the quick replies. Yes, I've got a Honeywell HW thermostat which probably came with the programmer. How would I integrate a new wireless thermostat with my existing programmer? I'd like to keep my kitchen tidy so if I could get a programmer that communicated directly with the thermostat that'd be ideal, any ideas on which is best or even if they're available? Thanks in advance!

The Honeywell HW stat will work OK with any programmer.

You have three options:
  • Keep the existing EP2002 and just install a wireless thermostat
  • Keep the existing EP2002 (for HW control only) and install a wireless programmer
  • Install a wireless programmer for the CH and a single channel timer for the HW

There is nothing complicated with wiring up a wireless stat. The reciever part is just like the switching side of a normal stat without the temperature measuring device. So it has L and N terminals to provide power to the electronics and switchable terminals to supply poer to the boiler. The wall unit is battery operated.

Wiring will be explained in the instructions.

From your post Baxipoti, what's a boiler interlock and what does it do please? Sorry if this is basics but I don't know anything really about plumbing.

I was going to see about getting a thermostat to try to do my bit for the environment and maybe save a few pounds on my gas bill over the winter.

Once again, thank you for your help!

Baxpoti is correct about the boiler interlock.

This is just any means of wiring or control system that prevents the boiler firing unless there is a demand for heating or HW.

It may be a room stat, it could be a weather compensation system, or I believe a flow switch built into a boiler.

In your case the room stat would suffice as you are not updating the boiler.

The interlock reg would come into play if you replaced your boiler or were fitting a new ch system.
