Is asphalt as good as tarmac?

Thinking of doing my driveway in asphalt as it's played on a lot by the kids so better for falls etc. But is it as hard wearing and generally as good as tarmac? Roughly how much more that tar is it? Are the same founds required?

Its better and more expensive. Its particularly good for drives where turning is required because it doesn;t get ground away like tarmac does in spots where the wheels are constantly turned.
