Is Britain fracking the wrong thing?

Depends on how you define "Once", above.

Might be next week, next year, next century, or never.

We'll just have to wait, and see.

And in the meantime...

New Study Finds Worrisome Pattern of Birth Defects in Fracking Communities.

Science has long known that the developing fetus is sensitive to experiences of the mother – alcohol consumption, dietary factors, and mercury exposure are some of the more well-known examples. This sensitivity makes newborn babies an early indicator of something going wrong in the environment of the mother. Unfortunately, a team of researchers found preliminary evidence of something gone wrong when they looked at the patterns of birth defects in newborn babies in Colorado. The researchers found that babies whose mothers lived in close proximity to multiple oil and gas wells were 30% more likely to be born with defects in their heart than babies born to mothers who did not live close to oil and gas wells.

And here we go in circles again, citing American studies, where the cause is lack of environmental regulation.

But then that's all the environmentalists can do, cite the same biased statements again and again until it becomes wrote memory.

But then it is an effective way to win an argument, simply keep repeating yourself until the opponents can't be assed to keep refuting you.

The French have banned fracking as have many countries as they recognise the dangers.
So its not just a bunch of greenies who oppose it despite what the fossil fuel addicts would have us believe.

City slickers in this country with no idea about the environment should keep their noses out of the country side and not be given the chance to turn it into an industrialized waste land just because they can't go out and buy a woolly jumper.

.

It's not that they recognise 'the dangers', it's that governments are usually led on by pressure groups whipping up hysteria.
And it's not just about woolly jumpers - it's about keeping the power on.

I really do not know whether fracking "causes" environmental pollution, or not. But, for the sake of simplicity, let's assume that it does.
In such circumstances, "environmental regulation" will only save you up to a point; that point being when you run out of space or money to safely contain the poison you have been merrily creating.

I'm all for nuclear - boogered if I know what to do with all of the long-lived nasties though.

It is easy to be too short-term about this. Technology moves on and future generations may well find a use for what we today regard as dangerous waste.

We should concern ourselves with the present and short-term future and not wring our hands worrying about distant generations - they will have their own priorities which will probably be different to ours.

Or dealing with our selfish "short term" short sighted and ignorant legacy...

"Technology moves on and future generations may well find a use for what we today regard as dangerous waste"

Nuclear wastes are hazardous for tens of thousands of years.

For all we know they might find a way of using it to produce energy.

If their not all poisoned and deformed first. Buy hey ho its just future generations.
Who cares eh?

or they might find use of it in proliferation of nuclear weapons of limited destruction!

At the moment we are having some serious issues with our sea and flood water defences, and we are to contiain this highly polluted and radioactive water waste! God save this land of Glory and Hope!

One or two posts here have referred to Germany's dash for renewable energy.
Those who think renewables are the way forward should read this;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...revolt-as-green-dream-causes-cost-spiral.html

It is sobering reading.
We need this gas, and should ignore the self-indulgent alarmist nonsense put out by the greens..

"The government has vowed to break dependence on fossil fuels and source 50pc of all electricity from wind, solar and other renewables by 2030,"

I've always maintained that the Germans were being a little over-optimistic with that statement.

Perhaps that's because the Frogs don't need it, having already invested heavily in nuclear power (and as a result sell us their excess electricity!).
