Is gardening a hobby, or work?

I did get some pleasure when the newly made steps with planter, after planting the flowers, grew to a host of flowers, but cutting down the overgrown boundary fence was a chore, I knew needed doing.

So daughter asked what three hobbies we had, and I was not sure if I could include gardening, as Friday cutting hedge was hard work.

But I go and volunteer at local heritage railway, is that a hobby or work?

So the question is, how to make the garden enjoyable. Other than simply employ a gardener. I look at my bottom garden from below and above, and wonder how I can make it easier to manage. Lawn left top under apple trees is easy, and the new terraced bit to top right, needs filling with some sort of plants, to stop plants I don't want, like blackberry and convolvulus. Not keen on dandelion either. But tarmac seems to be the dandelion habitat.

However, I have never bothered with the garden, I was an away worker, so lawn front and rear in the past, but not keen on tar or concrete seeds, and I spend so much time tidying what I have, I don't do anything new. Other than lay slabs.

So what I want is to stop bits growing while I get around to planting what I want. I clear and plant an area one year, and by next year what I have planted has died, and need to start again.
