Is it better to cycle a boiler at low modulation rate with a controller than without?

Hello,

I am looking for a new boiler as current boiler has gone faulty (leaking heat exchange) and will be installing a load compensation controllers. The property I live in has a Heat Loss of 3.5-4 KW.

I am looking at a Intergas HRE 18 OV which has a low modulation rate of 6.10, nearly double than the heat loss of the property. We have a height restriction of 600mm in the kitchen cupboard, Intergas fits well.

Speaking to a boiler installer, he mentioned I would be wasting my money on a load compensation controller as my heat loss is far less, than the minimum output of the HRE and the boiler would be continuously cycling and he recommended using standards Honeywell (non-smart) which I already have.

In my view isn’t it better to cycle at low modulation (with a controller) compared to cycling without a modulation controller?

Yes, it is, there should be some fuel savings due to slightly less fuel consumption with tighter control of your room temperatures. Evohome will cycle boilers up to 6 times per hour even if the heat demand is greater than the boiler's minimum output.
