...the timer on the wall is broken. Do they have manual over-rides or some other way to get the central heating to fire up?

Go to the PCB, find your timers wires,remove them and replace with a wire link. Hey presto your boiler will fire up on CH

it's a keston 80 and there's also a drayton wireless thermostat. the thing on the wall is a potterton controller that's completely blank. Thx
Are you sure the batteries have not run out in your wireless stat?
