Is this a supporting arch?

I want to open up a fireplace and have uncovered an unusual looking triangular arch. Anyone know if this is a supporting arch or if we’d need to replace with a lintel?


Ordinarily I’d assume not, but the way the bricks have been cut into triangles above looks intentional, and that looks like the original mortar.

Can only guess from the area you have cleared but I would think it was part of an original arch that was left in place when the opening was bricked up. I would want a lintel installing.

Ignore it. If you are opening up the masonry to accommodate a wider opening, it becomes irrelevant to your lintelling needs in any case. If the masonry in-fill happens to fall out just replace it.
