Hello,

A friend had a new door fitted and wanted it to colour match – to some degree at least – the surrounding doors which he thought were mahogany.

He was told the new door was mahogany but it’s much pinker and lighter than he thought it would be, so he asked me to have a look. I’ve checked it against the samples in William A.Lincolns ‘World Woods in Colour’ book and the closest I can see is a ‘padang’.

Anyone any ideas how this could be treated stained to be closer to the other door?
How will time light effect the colour?

find a merchant that sells the full range of Colron wood dyes, pick the one or two that from the display (they usually have bits of stained wood on show) looks nearest to what you want. Try it out on an inconspicous part, such as the hinge edge, after fine-sanding and wiping with white spirit. You may want to use a few colours, and maybe mix a reddish with a brownish to get the tone you want, though it is preferable to use a single colour that you can match later. Keep the tin for any future work.

After colouring the door, use a clear matt or satin varnish, not a tinted woodstain.

Most "mahogany" wood dyes are much redder than the doors you show, so will not be what you want.

The off-cut you are holding up does look like a mahogany-type wood, and the older dor looks more oaky (but not a European oak)

There is (almost) no genuine mahogany on the market now as it was (almost) all cut down in the last hundred years. The term is now used for inferior woods of comparable appearance.

If the door has already been stained you will not be able to dye it so will have to wash over with a tinted varnish or woodstain, applied in thin coats, preferably the same range as was used before.

It's some illegally logged timber from the rain forests - that's what we use and nobody cares.

It looks like all you'll need straight varnish and a bit of time will mellow it out,how your has test patch work out

Looks like Lauan [poor mans mahogany], if looking to colour look for brown mahogany the red mahogany can be too red.
